On September 23, 2026, at the age of 34, Billy Root announced his retirement from professional cricket, ending a 14-year county career. During that time, the left-handed hitter represented Glamorgan and Nottinghamshire in all formats, helping the two teams win four trophies.
Billy Root’s role at the club had changed in the latter part of his playing career, as evidenced by the fact that he only played in two County Championship games and captained Glamorgan’s second XI in his final season. “It has been an absolute privilege to represent two great clubs and to share in the success of four trophy wins.” Root was quoted, “I feel incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to make a career out of something I have loved since I was a kid.”
What did Billy Root accomplish during his tenure in the county?
After graduating from Leeds Beckett University, Billy Root began playing professional cricket for Nottinghamshire. He was a member of the Nottinghamshire team that won the white-ball double in 2017, which was one of the county’s most successful limited-overs campaigns at the time.
Billy Root helped the Welsh county win two One-Day Cup championships after relocating to Glamorgan in 2019. He received a proper farewell at the club because he was a member of the Glamorgan team that won promotion to Division One of the County Championship last summer.
At Sheffield Collegiate CC, Root grew up playing with his brother, Joe, the England Test captain. When Billy was playing for MCC Young Cricketers and was England’s 12th man in a 2013 Test at Lord’s, the two briefly shared the field.

This week’s wave of departures across the county circuit includes the retirements at Glamorgan. Other seasoned experts who are ending their careers include Scott Borthwick of Durham, Luke Charlesworth of Gloucestershire, Anuj Dal of Derbyshire, and Rob Keogh of Northamptonshire.
