Ed Joyce has been named Cricket Ireland’s High Performance Batting Coach, with effect from September 28, 2026. In his new role, Joyce will start working with the Ireland Men’s senior squad and throughout the male talent route right away.
Ed Joyce has a strong playing history for the part. He played 151 games for Ireland, amassing 5,552 runs at an average of 40.82, including 29 half-centuries and 10 hundreds. Throughout his career, he also made 19 appearances for England, gaining experience at the top level of the game on both sides of the international divide.
Ed Joyce transitioned from playing to coaching, and in 2019, a year after he stopped playing, he was named Head Coach of Ireland Women. After leaving that role in February 2025, he returned to Cricket Ireland’s coaching staff and is now concentrating on the men’s program.
How did Ed Joyce discuss his new position?
Ed Joyce discussed his plans to contribute to the batting group and his return to Cricket Ireland’s lineup. Maintaining my involvement in Irish cricket was a top goal for me when I stopped playing. “I loved the daily aspect of working with players to develop and improve their techniques and mindset, and the head coach role with Ireland Women was a great experience,” he said. Whether it’s the men’s or women’s side of the sport, a number of principles have remained constant despite the significant changes and evolution of the modern game in recent years.
Even while the power game is becoming more important, every batter at this level still needs to have good technique and an optimistic outlook. The amount of effort that has gone on behind the scenes to prepare our players to compete on the international scale is evident when I look at the Ireland men’s team in recent years. I’m excited to get engaged in this project and maybe contribute some information and thoughts to help the batting group advance. Joyce said, “The goal is now consistency; the talent is there.”
Ed Joyce also thanked everyone who helped make the appointment possible. “It’s always a pleasure pulling on the shamrock, and I have learned to never take these opportunities for granted,” he said in closing. “Thank you to Graeme [West] and Wils [head coach Gary Wilson] for this opportunity.
