Australia’s 16-man Test team has included 37-year-old Scott Boland for the three-match series in South Africa that starts in October 2026. For the first time since playing the final of his 14 ODIs in Cape Town in October 2016, he has been selected to return to South Africa.
Boland’s sole prior encounter with South Africa occurred during the 2016 ODI trip, when Australia played an inexperienced bowling attack and lost the series 5-0. He took five wickets at an average of 34.20 and an economy rate of 6.33 across his three games in the series. To be fair, I am aware that things didn’t go well on the pitch. We bowled with a really inexperienced attack. I can’t recall anything, though, except from that. Where we were, I can’t recall. I’m not sure if I simply threw that memory away because it didn’t work out. However, Boland remarked, “I think ten years ago was a long time,” as cited.
Prior to making his Test debut on December 26, 2021, Boland did not play any more white-ball international cricket for Australia after that 2016 tour. Since then, he has grown to be an important part of Australia’s Test team. On July 14, 2025, he became the first Indigenous Australian to complete a hat-trick in Test cricket at Sabina Park in Jamaica. The three-Test series will take place in Gqeberha from October 18 to October 22 and in Johannesburg from October 27 to October 31 of 2026.
For the tour of South Africa, how has Scott Boland prepared?
Boland finished an eight-week bowling block prior to Australia’s August 2026 Test series against Bangladesh, however he did not play in those games. Selectors and medical personnel agreed that he would take a two-week break after that series before finishing another three-week training block. Boland’s approach to cricket has changed overall, as evidenced by the preparation strategy. He elaborated:
“I haven’t made many changes to my routine, such as how I bowl. However, Boland stated, “I think the biggest change is in getting all those little things right, getting better at knowing my body, and preparing for games.”
Boland and Glenn Maxwell will play a home 50-over match for Victoria against New South Wales at the Junction Oval on Friday, September 27, 2026, before travelling to South Africa on Sunday, September 28, 2026. It will be his first domestic 50-over match in 18 months and only his third in the previous three years.
What part might Scott Boland play in the Test series?
Given that Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer shared 14 wickets in Durban in 2022, Australia has added Matthew Kuhnemann as a second spinner to the team.
