At the Annual General Meeting on October 28, David Boon MBE will take over as Cricket Australia’s (CA) interim chair. Following his announcement to the CA Board that he would not seek reappointment and would step down following the AGM, incumbent Chair Mike Baird AO was appointed.
Having been a member of the CA Board for six years, Baird has held the position of Chair from February 2023. In February 2025, Boon was named to the CA Board following nine years as a director of Cricket Tasmania, including three years as Chair.
Prior to joining the CA Board, he worked as an ICC match referee and has extensive experience as an international player and administrator. From 2000 until 2011, he served as the general manager of cricket for Cricket Tasmania and was a member of the Australian Selection panel. In the months after the AGM, a selection procedure for the CA Chair will be conducted.
David Boon, the CA’s acting chair, stated:
“Taking up the position of Interim CA Chair during this incredibly exciting and difficult period for cricket is an enormous honour.
“I’m excited to head the CA Board as we continue to make choices that promote Australia’s interests internationally and guarantee the long-term health and success of the game here.
“I want to sincerely thank Mike for his leadership and dedication as an enthusiastic supporter of Australian cricket, from grassroots clubs to the Cricket Australia and ICC Board Rooms and all in between.”
“Everyone should respect Mike’s efforts to guide Australian cricket, face the numerous challenging choices that cricket faces, and play a significant role at the ICC throughout the game.”
Mike Baird, the departing CA Chair, stated:
“I have made the decision to resign as CA Chair and Director after careful deliberation. “I am thrilled that David Boon has consented to serve as the interim chair while we finish the formal chair process. Over the next few weeks, David Boon and I will work through a transition process.”
“I have been really happy to be involved in cricket oversight on the CNSW Board and, for the past six years, the CA Board, including nearly four years as Chair.
“I want to express my gratitude to the umpires, club cricketers, volunteers, and supporters who are essential to our sport. CA will announce record income, profit, viewership, attendance, and—most importantly—a 40% rise in participation over the previous four years this year.I also think that the Big Bash’s long-term sustainability is guarantyd because of recent moves.
“I also want to express my gratitude to the Australian players, particularly the captains I worked closely with, Pat Cummins, Mitch Marsh, Alyssa Healy, and Sophie Molineux, who have not only inspired on the pitch with their accomplishments but also demonstrated to future generations what it means to have character.”

“I think the CA Board is still a good leader in Australian cricket. I am quite confident about the future because of their combination of substantial experience and enthusiasm for the game.
Lastly, Todd Greenberg, the CEO, has my gratitude. Todd is, in my opinion, the greatest sports administrator in the nation, and he will surely position cricket for future generations to succeed.
