Five days after leading Belfast Wolves in the ETPL final in Dublin, Glenn Maxwell has been selected for Victoria’s One-Day Cup team to play New South Wales in Melbourne on Friday, September 25. For what will be the Junction Oval’s first floodlit game under its recently installed lights, test bowler Scott Boland is also on the team.

After quitting ODI cricket, Glenn Maxwell did play two One-Day Cup games for Victoria in September of last year, scoring his first List A century for his state. However, those games served as a prelude to a three-match T20I tour of New Zealand, and he was still under contract with CA at that time. Between now and the BBL, Victoria will only play four One-Day Cup games: September 25, October 12, October 24, and November 16. It is unclear if Glenn Maxwell will play more.

All save Murphy will return for the match on October 12. The offspinner will stay in India with Australia A for three one-day games that conclude on October 11. Rogers was impressed with his young team’s performance in Brisbane last week despite the absence of all those stars. They chased down 336 after being reduced to 14 for 4 thanks to spectacular hundreds from skipper Will Sutherland and debutant Liam Blackford.
Given that Maxwell resigned from ODIs in early 2025 and does not currently have a contract with either Cricket Australia or Victoria, his selection is noteworthy. Because he is only conceptually available for Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) and Australia has only five T20Is scheduled for the 2026–2027 contract year, he was taken off CA’s central contract list earlier this year. For Australia’s most recent Twenty20 International series in Bangladesh in June, he was left out. But the state has now called on Maxwell for Friday’s match since he had discussed with Victoria over the winter that he would be available for the One-Day Cup if needed.
Boland’s participation will act as a warm-up before his Sunday flight to South Africa as a member of Australia’s Test team. He was not present for Victoria’s season-opening One-Day Cup victory over Queensland in Brisbane on Friday. With centuries from captain Will Sutherland and rookie Liam Blackford, the team chased down 336 after being reduced to 14 for 4.We’ll handle it match by match, I believe. Additionally, it will be extremely difficult for us to accommodate everyone when the Australia A players return. And I believe we’ll simply wait till the next game for now, even though I know we’ll have to make some decisions that may irritate folks along the way,” Rogers stated.
