Former India U19 wicketkeeper Shreevats Goswami has thought back on Yuzvendra Chahal‘s career and his exclusion from India’s Test cricket team. Goswami talked on the development of India’s leg-spinners over the past few decades and made comparisons between some of the greatest cricket players.
Shreevats Goswami illustrated his thesis regarding cricket excellence with sporting analogies. He pointed out that although Virat Kohli embodies one standard of brilliance in the game, Shane Warne’s skill as a spinner embodies another. Goswami shared his thoughts on Chahal’s professional path and what would have happened if the leg-spinner had been given chances in the longest format. Shane Warne was the Messi of cricket, a true wizard, if Virat Kohli is the Ronaldo of the sport.
However, I can’t help but think of Chahal, who hasn’t represented India in any Tests. Speaking on the Beyond23 Cricket podcast, Goswami remarked, “He could have been one of the greats if he had played Tests. “The fact that he has never represented India in a Test is unexpected. For a short while, Amit Mishra was excellent. However, India hasn’t produced any exceptional leg-spinners since Kumble,” he continued.
The absence of Yuzvendra Chahal in Test cricket
Due to the national team management’s preference for Kuldeep Yadav over Chahal in the selection order for the longest format, Chahal has never played in an Indian Test match. After making his ODI debut against Zimbabwe in June 2016, the leg-spinner went on to become a vital member of India’s white-ball cricket team. Throughout his international career, he has not had the chance to establish himself in Test cricket, despite his brilliance in limited-overs cricket.

Yuzvendra Chahal has made notable progress in limited-overs cricket during his international career. His success in the shortest format was highlighted when he became the first Indian and the second player in T20 International history to take six wickets. Despite not participating in any games, he was a member of the Indian team that won the 2024 T20 World Cup. Despite his local performances and India’s spin-bowling criteria, his white-ball credentials are still solid, but the Test door has stayed locked.
