As his team gets ready for the opening ODI of the three-match series in Thiruvananthapuram on September 27, 2026, West Indies captain Shai Hope has accepted the challenge of traveling India. The West Indies, who are ranked tenth in the world, travel to India to play a team that has dominated bilateral cricket for twenty years. Alzarri Joseph and Roston Chase, two seasoned players, are part of Hope’s team along with newcomers on their maiden national tour.

Shai Hope has accepted the challenge of traveling India

In the run-up to the first game, Shai Hope considered the task at hand. The West Indies’ previous series victory on Indian territory occurred 24 years ago, and they haven’t won a bilateral series against India in 20 years. Hope has been the West Indies’ best player in ODI cricket since the beginning of 2025. He has amassed 869 runs at an average of 51.11, which is the most of any West Indies hitter in the format during that time. It’s always difficult to play India in their home country, but we must relish this challenge.

You anticipate the finest when you arrive here. It’s a fantastic way for us to assess our team’s performance. It will never be easy to play somebody in their native environment. But we always look forward to it,” Shai Hope stated, as reported. You want to compete against the best when you play international cricket. The true test is when they play in their own environment. It’s going to be an exciting one for us, and we’re looking forward to it,” he continued.

In India, Shai Hope has a solid personal record. In 11 ODIs played in the nation, he averaged 56.88 while scoring 512 runs, including two fifties and two hundreds. His familiarity with Indian conditions distinguishes him from a number of traveling team players who are making their maiden trip to the nation. Hope admitted that playing in India necessitates a different strategy than in other regions of the world. I take great pride in striving to be the best version of myself.

One of those things is that you need to be flexible. flexibility when playing against various opponents and in various situations. It won’t work out every time. It’s a professional sport, as we know. Not every day will be your day. But in order to maximize my chances of scoring runs, I really try to pay attention to the little things.

You have to play differently here in India than you would in Australia or England. “Even back in the Caribbean,” Shai Hope remarked. It simply comes down to being extremely critical of how you approach your preparation and training. I constantly make an effort to bring that up in team rooms throughout our conversations and discussions. He continued, “Just try to pay close attention to detail, how we prepare and analyze the opposition, and the conditions that we play in.”

Shai Hope was upbeat about the younger players on the team and how they would benefit from the tour. Since the beginning of 2025, the West Indies have only won 6 of 22 ODIs, demonstrating their lack of consistency. Hope, however, thinks that playing against India might hasten the growth of players with less experience. For these players, I think it’s an extremely exciting time. I believe I can speak on their behalf, even though I may be speaking out of turn. You look forward to playing on this trip whenever you visit India. It was a tour I had high expectations for myself when I was younger in my career.

Shai Hope remarked, “I wanted to check where I was. “Some of the men in our current group have never been to India and have never played in these conditions. I see it as an exciting period. Our goal is to always prevail. From a team standpoint, we want to ensure that we achieve the best outcomes. But as a leader, I personally want to see advancement. I want to see how quickly we can adjust to compete with the world’s best. And I believe we’ll be heading in the correct route if we can understand that we’re at a critical point in the game,” he continued.

Shai Hope stated her resolve to end the cycle while acknowledging the statistical realities that the West Indies must deal with. With the West Indies scheduled to participate in the ICC qualification event early next year, the team’s failure to automatically qualify for the 2027 ODI World Cup gives the series even more impetus. The ugly truth is that those statistics are consistently near the top of the list in practically every series we play.

We frequently claim that we haven’t defeated this team in more than 15 or 20 years. You can discuss whether or not we automatically qualify for the World Cup, but some of the progress we make as a team is undoubtedly admirable. Win against the best team whenever you travel to India and desire to play against the finest squad. Thus, it will undoubtedly provide more motivation. Hope stated, “We’re looking forward to this one even though we know it will be a difficult uphill battle.
