During the forthcoming five-match Twenty20 International series between New Zealand and India, which starts on October 22, 2026, Rob Walter, the head coach of New Zealand, has stated his intention to test 15-year-old Indian opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi on fast and bouncy wickets.

Born on March 27, 2011, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi made his T20I debut against England in July 2026. During the Zimbabwe series that same year, he became the youngest player in T20I ever to score a half-century. His outstanding efforts at the 2026 Under-19 World Cup and in the IPL 2025 and 2026 have garnered him a lot of attention.

Yes, I would really like to see him play at some speed in bouncy wickets to see how things change. He is an intriguing player, though. In the IPL, you have witnessed him dominate the top bowlers in the world. The Times of India quoted New Zealand coach Rob Walter as stating, “I think the challenge is always to see how that translates to different conditions and also how do we bowl to him in our conditions.”

Once more, as a coach, you secretly want to watch how your players react when they are under a little pressure. I’m excited about it, assuming that’s the case. They do have many excellent players besides him if he’s not present,” he continued.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi did not play in either of India’s two-run triumph over Japan in Sano in September 2026 or the country’s 3-0 T20I series victory over Afghanistan. While acknowledging that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi might or might not be part of India’s final squad for the New Zealand series, Walter’s remarks make it apparent that New Zealand is ready to target him with speed and agility if he does play.

A wider tactical knowledge is also evident in Walter’s comments. For a young batter who has established his reputation mostly in the IPL and in conditions more familiar to Indian players, New Zealand’s home conditions, which usually give more pace and movement off the surface than subcontinental pitches, present a distinct challenge.

New Zealand’s first T20I series since the T20 World Cup final, where they were defeated by India in Ahmedabad, is this five-match series. Although Walter admitted that the recollection of that loss has some significance, it was evident that the squad’s main goal is not retaliation.

In addition, Walter discussed the controversy surrounding India’s wide call during the Japan T20I match in Sano, pointing out that he hadn’t paid much attention to the game.I viewed a very brief part. I noticed that the broad ruling was the subject of some debate. To be fair, though, I didn’t watch a lot of it. I believe it’s preferable to have less,” Walted said.
